EduSynch CEFR Test

EduSynch CEFR Test: what to expect and how to prepare

Thinking of taking the EduSynch CEFR test? Here is a quick, practical overview of how it works, how it is scored and how to get ready. I have been preparing for it live on my YouTube channel, and this page is the starting point for all my videos, transcripts and exercises.

🧭 The test at a glance

It is a fully online test that measures Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing, and takes about an hour in total.

SectionTimeWhat you do
Reading20 minutes12 to 15 questions on passages
Listening10 minutes8 to 12 questions on conversations and lectures
Speaking10 minutes3 questions: 15 seconds to prepare, 45 seconds to answers
Writing20 minutes1 essay (see the note below)

Word count note: the official guide gives the minimum essay length as 150 words in one place and 250 in another, so aim for 250 to be safe.

📊 Levels and scoring

  • 15 levels. EduSynch expands the usual six CEFR levels (A1 to C2) into a finer scale that runs from A0 to C2.
  • Reading and Listening are scored automatically, based on how many answers you get right.
  • Speaking and Writing are marked by certified evaluators, who look at fluency, coherence, grammatical accuracy and vocabulary.
  • Your report shows a score for each skill and an overall CEFR level.

🎯 Section by section

Reading

Passages come from textbook or professional-style articles. Questions check the main idea, specific details, vocabulary in context and inference.

  • Skim the passage first to get the general idea.
  • Notice keywords that point to important details.
  • Practise reading between the lines: some answers are implied, not stated.
Listening

You listen to real-life conversations and lectures, then answer questions about the main idea, details and the speaker’s attitude.

  • Take short notes as you listen.
  • Pay attention to tone and intention, not only words.
  • Listen for structure: introduction, main points, conclusion.
Speaking

You get a prompt asking for an opinion or a personal experience, with very little time: 15 seconds to think and 45 seconds to speak.

  • Use a simple structure: opening, two or three points, short conclusion.
  • Keep going smoothly rather than stopping to fix every mistake.
  • Record yourself and listen back, focusing on pronunciation and pacing.

Writing

You write an essay giving your opinion or describing an experience, in 20 minutes.

  • Spend the first few minutes planning your main argument and supporting points.
  • Write clearly: shorter, accurate sentences beat long, confusing ones.
  • Leave a minute or two to check grammar and logic.

✨ How to prepare

  • Set a target level and work out which skill is your weakest.
  • Study alongside me. If you’re not sure how to organise your preparation, watch me prepare live: Day 1 of my road to C1 and the three hours before my CEFR exam.
  • Practise a little every day, mixing reading, listening, speaking and writing. The live CEFR practice sessions in the Level Up Lab give you ready-made material to follow along with.
  • Use real English: news, podcasts, films and conversation. My shadowing sessions are a good way to train your ear and your pronunciation with natural speech.
  • Practise with a timer, so the time limits feel normal on the day.
  • Get feedback on speaking and writing from a teacher or language partner. It is the fastest way to improve those two skills, and it’s what my prep lessons focus on.

✅ Test day checklist

  • Check your computer, microphone and webcam beforehand.
  • Use a stable internet connection, wired if you can.
  • Choose a quiet, well-lit room and tell people at home your test time.
  • Have your ID ready, plus pen and paper for listening notes.
  • Sleep well, eat something light and log in early.
  • Stay in the test window. The AI proctoring tracks behaviour, gaze, your face being present and events such as switching windows or opening other software.

🚀 After the test

Use your score report to set your next goal. If the level isn’t what you needed, plan a retake and use the feedback on your speaking and writing to focus your practice.

Watching videos helps, but personal feedback on your speaking and writing is what moves your score. Book a one-to-one prep session and we’ll work on exactly what your level needs.
