📏 What is the CEFR?
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), created by the Council of Europe, is the international standard for describing how well someone can use a language. It has six levels, grouped into three bands: basic users (A), independent users (B) and proficient users (C).
| Level | Name | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| A1 | Beginner | You can use familiar everyday phrases and very simple sentences. |
| A2 | Elementary | You can handle simple, routine exchanges about familiar topics. |
| B1 | Intermediate | You can deal with most everyday situations and describe experiences and opinions. |
| B2 | Upper-intermediate | You can interact fluently with native speakers and follow the main ideas of complex texts. |
| C1 | Advanced | You can use English flexibly and effectively for work, study and social life. |
| C2 | Proficient | You can understand almost everything and express yourself precisely, with subtle shades of meaning. |
Most exams and employers now describe their requirements in CEFR levels, which is why knowing your level is the first step.
